I AM NOT AFRAID OF BAD NEWS

How do feel when you read the news? Are you tossed by tumultuous headlines and knocked sideways by the latest bit of bad news? Is it all water off a duck’s back? Or do you just steer well clear of the news all together?! How do you react to hearing that our new prime minister has already resigned?!

Psalm 2 says that in the face of great evil, ’He who sits in heaven laughs’. How is God able to laugh at things that would terrify most of us? Because He knows who He is, what He is capable of and He sees the end from the beginning.

Psalm 112 Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
    they will be remembered forever.

They will have no fear of bad news;
    their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

When Christ is truly our rock, refuge and strength, we will ride all sorts of circumstantial storms with supernatural peace. I am not saying it will all be smooth sailing, nor that there may not be all sorts of emotions to navigate along the way, but ultimately, we can withstand the storm, because our peace wasn’t found in the nice weather, but in something and someone far deeper, stronger and more eternal. Someone who gave their life for us and for whom we can surrender our lives in return.

Surrender your life afresh to Jesus today. No more ‘my rights, my way’. But from the bottom of your heart, pray ‘not my will, but yours be done’ and watch as many fears lose their grip. When we regain eternal perspective that our lives are not our own and remember that only those who lose their lives for Christ’s sake truly live, there is far less to be afraid of!
